SPRAY-DRYING

Spray-drying is a well-known technique that generates solid powders from solution or suspension and has special applications in the pharmaceutical industry in manufacturing drug delivery systems and controlled release formulations. Consisting of a single step process that involves atomisation of the liquid feed, which is injected into a drying chamber containing hot air or nitrogen. The droplets instantly dry into solid particles that are subsequently collected in the drying chamber. The two factors that can influence the properties of the output material are the spray-dried particle formulation factors and the spray-drying parameters.

Spray-drying of therapeutic protein and peptide formulations

Although spray-drying has been widely used in the pharmaceutical industry, a limited number of applications are related to the spray-drying of therapeutic protein and peptide formulations. However, recently there has been increasing interest in the delivery of biopharmaceuticals via the pulmonary route using spray-dryed products.
